Artistic Content

The Urge of Being – Sailing Expedition is a creative expedition and workshop on board the sailing boat LAFRI. It is a open-sea voyage open to performing artists and artists of all genres, creatives, and researchers. The expedition includes 10 days of sailing in the North Aegean Sea on the sailing boat LAFRI, daily artistic exploration in amazing natural sites, and a final site-specific performance.

Why do we do this expedition?
In recent years, I have launched many projects, residencies, and site-specific performances on the sea, on boats, and in contact with grey whales in Baja California, Mexico. Motivated by the vivid and inexplicable sense of recognition and belonging that I – and many people – feel when we are at sea, I began bringing my artistic practice closer and closer to the sea and her creatures. What happens to creative processes when we take them away from the studio or the theater – away from a purely anthropocentric setting – and bring them into contact with the sea? What happens when we expose ourselves and our creative processes to the immensity of the sea

Communal Life and Spaces
LAFRI is meant to be a project where communal life fuses with artistic processes, where nature inspires art and activism. We will spend 10 days living, sailing, and creating together, while also having time to be with ourselves. We will have free time and decide each day’s schedule together: when to do our artistic exploration, when to relax, when to navigate, etc.!

  • 16.07 Embark in the morning in Mytilini, Lesvos
  • 16.07 – 23.07 Navigation and artistic exploration around the island of Lesvos
  • 24.07 Site-specific performance in Eresos
  • 25.07 Cleaning your cabin and disembark in the morning in Eresos, Lesvos

In this project, we are involved both in artistic processes and communal life. And… each participant has their privacy: a single cabin with a personal toilet (equipped with a shower and water)! There is the possibility to share the cabin with another person at a reduced price (the cabin features one double bed). Please contact us if you are interested.

PRICE LIST AND “EARLY BIRD” INFORMATION

  • 1100 Euro for payments by 01.01.2027
  • 1260 Euro for payments by 01.03.2027
  • 1340 Euro for payments after 01.03.2027

To book your spot you are requested to pay a deposit of 500 Euro via bank transfer. The rest will be paid when you arrive the boat).

The fee includes: daily creative workshop in different locations and on the boat, boat expenses, fuel, port fees, accommodation, navigation.

The fee DOES NOT include: food, drinks, cleaning, cooking, helping the skipper with sailing the boat. The cost of the fuel (diesel 6lt/h) will be calculated a the end of the trip, according to the actual time of motor usage.

Accomodation
Each participant has a single cabin with personal toilet with shower and water. There is the possibility to share the cabin with another person with a reduced price. Please contact us if you are interested. Note that the cabin has one double-bed. 

Food
The food for the whole expedition will be bought on the first day. The food expenses will be divided among the participants and  will cover the meals for the participants and for the skipper Nikolas and facilitator Daniela.
